The sector includes a large array of stakeholders that provide services through electricity generation, transmission, distribution and marketing for industrial, commercial, public and residential customers. It also includes many public institutions that regulate the sector.
A Mergent analysis shows the market capitalization of the top five major electricity providers in Europe totaled US$235.53 billion as of May 8, 2018 with the majority of the market cap owned by Enel, 27.19%. Iberdrola SA had 21.31%; and Engie SA, 17.96%; Électricité de France, 17.18%; and National Grid PLC with 16.37% of the total.
