Internet protocol (IP) traffic in the US, according to US multinational technology conglomerate Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) has risen annually by more than 30% since 2010. The growth of social networking and steep increase video traffic fueled the growth.
Cisco expects global IP traffic to rise nearly threefold over the five years from 2016. Traffic is expected to continue to rise with the rollout of new technologies like the internet of things (IoT) or Thingification, which will add billions of connected data sources throughout the country by 2020. IoT could easily and quickly push through exabyte volumes and enter the world of zettabytes per year.
